President's Message

I have been privileged recently to see the kind of innovative thinking our organization is devoted to, in action. The experience came as I observed the team members of Project Service Connector come together for the first time. The project is a collaborative effort of Saskatchewan municipalities, researchers, and staff members of Communities of Tomorrow. Its mandate is to find new and more efficient ways of dealing with the thousands of municipal water service connection replacements that must be done every year in our province.

Project Service Connector Launched

A unique group of people has begun the task of bringing innovative thinking to a common area of interest for all Saskatchewan municipalities-a more efficient process to replace municipal water service connections. The working group, numbering almost 40 people from a wide cross-section of backgrounds and disciplines, accepted a challenge from Communities of Tomorrow to attack the problem and emerge with a recommended solution over a period of three months. It's known as "Project Service Connector".

"This whole concept emerged from our consultations with municipalities about their needs for innovation in infrastructure," says Communities of Tomorrow President John Lee. "One of the challenges that came out in almost every discussion was the need to replace a large number of water service connections due to their age and increasing failure rate. There are city employees and contractors doing that work virtually every day. If we can help find a better way, there is an enormous potential savings to city budgets and much less disruption of streets and homes." [Read more]

Greywater Recycling Project Moves to Next Stage

The research project headed by Dr. Stephanie Young of the University of Regina (U of R) will move to the next stage with new funding from Communities of Tomorrow and the Government of Canada.

Dr. Young and her team are involved in a long term study to develop technology that will allow greywater, such as the waste water from sinks, to be reclaimed and recycled for other purposes, rather than simply flushed down the drain.

Communities of Tomorrow on behalf of Enterprise Saskatchewan and the federal government are providing $277,000 in project funding to allow Dr. Young to install and pilot test greywater reclamation technology at the University of Regina’s Research & Innovation Centre. [Read more]

Minister Encourages Innovation

Saskatchewan Minister of Enterprise Ken Cheveldayoff is urging collaboration to get maximum results from innovative thinking. Here are the minister's remarks from a symposium on innovation held by the Southwest Enterprise Region, in Swift Current.

"The innovation economy is very competitive, has the potential to be very lucrative, and is already an economic engine in our province. With award-winning research parks and a focus on innovation, Saskatchewan is poised to create unlimited opportunities for growth and provide advanced scientific service."  [Read more]
